With our previous session we started our CoDesign process with the aim to define a Civic Design Method and how CivicWise, both Community and Platform will work.

Next week we will continue with our CoDesign process with a session dedicated to define the first step of the Civic Design Method, which is the OPENING step.

The Hangout Meeting will be the 8th of april at 19h (GMT London Time)

We have just launching a new tool that will improve our discussion and our CoDesign process. That tool is called Discourse. It’s a forum. Please have a look at it, and register.

This week we will concentrate on this two questions:

#PRINCIPLES | Definition, debate, selection

#OPENING | How we should start a Civic Design Process?

Carers, Magazine and Core Principles Document

Yesterday we had our second global video-hangout. You can see the recorded video here.

Core Principles Document

We this meeting we discussed about our core values and principles. We had a very interesting conversation and we decided to create a collaborative document where we can contribute to our vision. The idea is to create a document before our next meeting that will be on the 8th of April.

You can have a look at the document and contribute here.

Carers

We introduced to our distributed governance a new figure called Carer.
A Carer is a sort of Supervisor who cares about a specific topic or matter. He coordinates but he doesn’t have any hierarchical higher position. For any role we can have one or more Carers.
So far we have these ones:
Communication – Domenico (@urbanohumano)
Governance – Domenico (@urbanohumano)
Academia/ Research – Ana (@EmDeplo)Pablo? (@pablo_sendra)
Local authorities – Noel (@noelito)
Principles – Fausto (@FaustoLlopis), Andrea

We detected the need for other Carers to manage Circles, Competitions and Money, but so far we don’t have any volunteer for that, so if you want to be please send a tweet to @civicwise or contact us here.

CivicWise Magazine

We also decided to start an online magazine focused on Collaborative Urbanism and Civic Engagement. The first carer of the project is Domenico but more Carers are needed. If you want to colaborate please contact Domenico directly.

Having a Magazine doesn’t mean that this blog will disappear. The aim of this blog stays the same, which is to inform about the CivicWise project itself.

Competitions

We also talked about some competitions we should take in account
European Social Innovation Competition
Also there is an interesting reference for that competition by Edgeryders > https://edgeryders.eu/en/making-lote3/how-to-win-the-european-social-innovation-competition-documentation

European Cultural Foundation – Idea Camp
Noel and Domenico will care about this one.

Nominet Trust (UK)

OuiShare Awards
Orsola (@orsolademarco) will care about it.

Designing the Urban Commons
Pablo will care about it.

Communication

We realised that we need some general documents to improve our distributed communication. In doing so we allow all of us to spread the word and organising local presentations in order to establishi new local partnership.
We need at least these documents:

Powerpoint presentation for group audience
Email to introduce the project
Competitions application
Promotional video/ Prezi?
CoDesign ten steps Graphic …

Whishlist

To improve our organization and distributed governance we decided to have an open wishlist.
Please put here any suggestion or thought.

Following some initial talks about our values and core principles.

Commitment to a vision of how things might be different, always trying to figure out the best way to make our vision come about. If we are dedicating a significant space in our lives to making change, it is important to have an idea of what we are trying to change society into.
Always be open to new lessons. Challenge ourselves and leave our comfort zone
Promote Critical self-awareness by examining our work self-critically and asks others for criticism on how it could be better
Be accountable by offering continuous feedback, creating reports and a culture of listening and self-reflection. Thinking constantly how we can be more efficient
Promote interconnectivity with other people, groups, initiatives that has the potential to change the world.
Leadership oriented toward empowering others and making everybody into a “leader”
Patient, persistent
Speaks in a language that the people we are trying to reach can understand. Try to stop using jargon
Learn about cooperation and working in a collective manner; we are here to help each other, not to compete with each other
Find a healthy, sustainable balance between the personal, social and political sides of civicwisers life
We assume our personal responsibility to act in order to transform society into a better place to live
Create an initiative that help people to improve their life balance by enjoying the process of co-creation

Looking for our Values and Core Principles

Last Wednesday we had an important meeting in London, followed by a Global Presentation Streaming. We saw the family growing, first in the London Circle, then worldwide.

We shared a brief analysis of the ideas and comments that we got from the kick-off event and were able to understand the process a bit better as we are trying to understand ourselves.

We took some important decisions:

Governance

Decentralized structure based on local and thematic Circles

The Circles are open and inclusive > Anyone can be part of one or more circles. Any member of the community can start a new circle. The circles could be focused on a specific city or neighbourhood or any other local identity and also on a specific topic.

Any Circle has it’s own identity and is independent but has to agreed with the general values and the core principles of CivicWise.

So for we have two circles: Global & London.

Two possible roles within the CivicWise community
Anyone could be member of CivicWise community. We have so far two possible roles:
1 – CivicWiser all the members > To become a CivicWiser fill this form > https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1gfgZYNL-VpWvmZVBKT-RUWPhnnfmrLYOy1n5THlWrJ4/viewform

2 – CivicBaker/CivicMaker (we aren’t sure about which one we should use) > To become a CivicBaker/Maker you have to be a CivicWiser and then be an active member of one of our Circles.

We would be happy to hearing your opinion about which word between CivicBaker or CivicMaker you prefer the most. Please use the hashtag #CivicBaker and #CivicMaker and help us with this “difficult” decision.

Here somo notes from the meeting:

Notes

“How different streams of action/thinking can interact and create conditions to take advantage of conjunctions points, where different projects have things in common”

“Need to differentiate between people that create (makers/bakers) and people that use the platform”

“A set of values and core principles of participation and communication are needed, as right now is still ambiguous”

“To move forward to need to assign roles and tasks, creating a distributed collaboration”

“We don’t need ambassadors, as we all are doing our bit to promote and engage. Every CivicBaker should assume that role”

“We need to focus on tools that enable people to feel part of it and tasks that make participation flexible”

“We are promoting a lack of hierarchy, where everyone feel inclusive and people

Here @Noelito‘s notes scheme

civicwiselondon_minute

We have open the conversation about values, roles, tools and tasks which is leading us to a more efficient and structured way of thinking/doing.

Now it’s time to define together our Values and our Core Principles. Please tweet your suggestion using the hashtag #civicwiseis > Next weekly hangout we will debate about it so don’t lose it!

A journey has started

Last Wednesday 4th March we launched our kick-off event where 45 curious attendees gathered to embrace CivicWise from the very beginning. We designed an event with colours and shapes, wine and nibbles, friendly people and positive messages, all in a once deserted office space in Central London that enabled the conversation to start.

That space was fruit of our collaboration with IITINSPIRATION, who managed to secure such an amazing environment for a pop-up adventure. That was our first proper partnership.
On the day, we were gifted with the presence of people who provided a warm and critical advice on how we can move things forward together.

blogpost1

People talked about ways of creating, designing and coding collaboratively in a very open and relaxed way. It was a brainstorming event where the ideas where flowing from the blank canvas to like-minded people conversations.

Some questions we heard:
How data can be used to improve civic projects?
How Sharing problem solving can speed up the learning experience?
How Pitching ideas around the challenge would help navigate a community through civic projects?
Soon we will be editing the videos and analysing the “Big roll” to share what was produced on the day.

The more we open the innovation process, the richer in talent and resources the community became, speeding the process of development.

So if you want be part of this you have plenty of ways and opportunities. Let us know how you would like to be involved. Please fill this form > https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1gfgZYNL-VpWvmZVBKT-RUWPhnnfmrLYOy1n5THlWrJ4/viewform

WHAT’S NEXT:

Now the wave is rising, we need to make sure it has consistency. To do so, we are organising WEEKLY WORKING (global) HANGOUT and a MONTHLY NEW COLLABORATORS (Local) MEETING where we will update our work to the newcomers.

We will start with the weekly video-hangout sessions on the 18th of March with a global streaming kickoff event starting at 8pm (London time).

You can watch live the presentation directly from our website.
If you want to take part on the discussion follow us on Google+ and let us know.
